Celia Cruz and Gloria Estefan are a generation apart and were born into different racialized and classed situations in Cuba, but have come to represent an idealized Cuban identity, one that hangs onto a particular memory of pre-Castro Cuba and fantasizes about a post-Castro Cuba. Their nostalgic pre-communism/Castro discourses echo mainstream US media representations. Cruz and Estefan are especially successful with US media because their discourse fit so well into this narrative. Their long careers provide them an opportunity to discuss how they interact with mainstream representations of Cuba and how Cubans interact with them.
